A gentle approach to ceremonial cacao
There are so many ways people work with cacao.
Some people sit quietly. Some journal. Some pray, meditate, walk in nature, talk with friends, make art, or simply drink a warm cup while waking up slowly in the morning.
You really don’t need to overcomplicate it.
The most important thing is that it feels good to you.
That you feel relaxed. Comfortable. A little more connected to yourself. A little softer around the edges. That’s enough.
Sometimes the internet can make ceremonial cacao feel very serious or intimidating, but honestly, cacao has always felt much more generous than strict to me. More like a warm grandmother than a teacher with rules.
She nourishes. She comforts. She gives.
Preparing Your Cacao
Start with a cacao you genuinely enjoy drinking.
Around ½ ounce to 1 ounce (15–30 grams) is a beautiful place to begin. If you don’t have scales, don’t worry about it too much. Start smaller and adjust naturally over time. Your body usually tells you what feels right.
Add hot water and gently warm the cacao together.
For the smoothest texture, I love preparing it slowly in a small pot while stirring continuously. As soon as you see the first little threads of steam begin to rise, it’s usually ready.
Then add anything else you love:
cinnamon, vanilla, honey, panela, chili, herbs, coconut milk, flower essences, or nothing at all.
Less is often more.
Good cacao already carries so much warmth and character on its own.
Taking a Moment for Yourself
Pour the cacao into your favorite cup.
Find a place where you can breathe a little more deeply and not be disturbed for a while, even if it’s only ten quiet minutes before the day begins.
Hold the cup in your hands for a moment.
Feel the warmth.
Let yourself notice that you are here.
Sometimes we move through our days so quickly that we forget we deserve simple moments of care and attention.
Notice the aroma. Imagine the rainforest where the cacao grew — the trees, the rain, the soil, the people who worked with it along the way.
And when you feel ready, slowly sip your cacao.
You don’t need to force anything or chase a big experience.
Just notice what’s there:
your body,
your thoughts,
your emotions,
your breathing,
the taste,
the warmth.
Sometimes cacao feels energizing.
Sometimes grounding.
Sometimes emotional.
Sometimes it simply tastes beautiful and helps you slow down for a little while.
And honestly, that’s already enough.
