Playa Negra
Best for: Walking, sunsets, photography, local atmosphere
Just north of Puerto Viejo, Playa Negra is instantly recognisable by its striking black volcanic sand. The beach is popular with locals, morning walkers, and photographers, especially in the late afternoon when the dark sand contrasts beautifully with the Caribbean Sea.
Swimming is possible in calmer conditions, but it's generally better known for its scenery than for spending an entire day in the water.
Playa Cocles
Best for: Surfing, lively atmosphere, younger travellers
Only a few minutes south of town, Playa Cocles is Puerto Viejo's surfing beach.
Consistent waves attract surfers throughout the year, while the wide beach offers plenty of space for walking and relaxing. You'll find beach volleyball games, slack lines, families, surfers, and plenty of local life.
Even if you don't surf, it's one of the most energetic beaches on the Caribbean coast.
The river at the southern end of the beach is a favorite place for families and picnics.
Playa Chiquita
Best for: Quiet walks, couples, relaxing
Despite its name, Playa Chiquita stretches for quite some distance.
Small rocky coves alternate with sandy sections, creating peaceful places to sit, read, or simply listen to the waves. It's generally quieter than Cocles and rewards visitors looking for a slower pace.
Punta Uva
Best for: Swimming, kayaking, postcard scenery
For many visitors, Punta Uva is the image they imagined before arriving in Costa Rica.
Clear turquoise water, gently leaning palms, and calm conditions make it one of the area's best swimming beaches.
It's also the starting point for kayaking through the nearby rainforest waterways, where monkeys, birds, and occasionally sloths can be seen from the water.
Playa Arrecife
Best for: Families, calm water, snorkelling
Protected by offshore reefs, Playa Arrecife often offers calmer water than many neighbouring beaches.

Playa Grande

It is popular with surfers, especially when conditions are good, and its length makes it ideal for walking. The beach can feel wonderfully quiet during the week, although it becomes busier on weekends.
Manzanillo
Best for: Nature lovers, snorkelling, escaping the crowds
At the southern end of the road lies Manzanillo, where rainforest meets the Caribbean Sea.
The village feels noticeably quieter than Puerto Viejo, and the nearby Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge protects one of the richest natural areas on the coast.
